Voici le
compte-rendu du Jubilee Katana !
Here
is the report on the Katana Jubilee !
Organisation
: Erich Walitsch
8-10
septembre
2006
Seefeld,
Deutschland & Eggenburg, Östereich
Cet
The
event was held between Seefeld, home of Target Design,
and Eggenburg, at the Ehn Motorcycle Museum. Mister
Hans Georg Kasten (founder of Target Design with Jan
Fellström and Hans Arthur Muth) offered Mister Friedrich
Ehn, owner of the Austrian Motorcyle Museum and ED-2
prototype, to restore the model which had suffered with
the international exhibitions and lack of use. It was
organised by Erich Walitsch, well known among the Jochen
Rindt fans for his historian activities !

Rencontrer
Hans Georg Kasten fur un grand moment ! Nous avons pu
discuter de la genèse de la Katana. Taget fut commissionné
en 1979 pour créer ED-1 sur la base d'une "fade"
GS550.
Meeting
Hans Jörg Kasten was a great moment ! We could discuss
about the genesis of the Katana : Target Design was
commissioned in 1979 to create ED-1 on the basis of
a "boring" GS550. Then Suzuki asked for a
bigger version to appear simultaneously on the market -
an error according to Mr. Kasten, as the 550/650 styling
went into production with tamer features compared to
the 1100, and thus did not really benefit from the
wow factor of the target styling and the eventual "range
effect" that was attainable.
La "New Katana" était moins minimaliste
came with my own pop-up Katana, and I asked Mr Kasten
for his opinion on this bike that was designed
in Japan and which try to replicate the target styling
: he agreed that it is a nice bike... "but they
did not understand the concept !". Indeed the base
idea of the Katana design was a very German sense of
purpose. So the vents on the bikes where meant to improve
cooling of the oil radiator (that was to be fitted to
the bike, but cancelled in production), just as the shape of
the fuel tank and seat was meant to integrated the pilot
in the bike, instead of installing him "on" the bike like
was the norm then. The clean shape, simple colour scheme,
side-mounted choke button also had the benefit of being
more economical to produce. The "New Katana" was less
minimalist and sports oriented, and the heavy headlamp
installation was a gadget - but what a nice gadget ;-)
!". La séparation vert/noir des fonctions tachymètre
et compte-tours était conçue pour faciliter leur
lecture. Looking
at ED-2 "in the flesh", we could see that
the 1100 Katana lost little from its prototype
shape to production, event though the headlamp had to
be raised a little (legal requirements here), the seat
was built in one piece and made longer (ease of production
using the standard GSX frame), tank was larger (fuel
range) and a little fairing gave a more adequate protection
than the raised instruments. The instrument block was
raised, according to Mr. Kasten, mostly "because
it looked nicer !" - the black/green separation
was meant to help distinguish both speedo and rpm functions
on the block and disappeared in production.
The
now famous Katana logo was created wih the help from
a friend who was working at Mitsubushi, who drew the
Kanji symbol when Mr. Kasten asked him how the
word Katana would look like in Japanese. The design
team at Target felt the bike should have a Japanese
name, expressing its origin, and that the Japanese
should be proud of their product - at the time their
reputation was that they could only make copies ! It
is a funny trick of history that it is a foreign design
studio that gave Suzuki the confidence to launch a product
which shouted confidence and pride. By the way, the
day Mr. Kasten first showed the prototype to the Suzuki
management, the Japanese all shouted together "KATANA
!"
thanks to the logo. This probably partly explains the
success of the Katana range in Japan. The Katana is
the sword of the samuraï, and the soul of the warrior.
Funnily enough, the Katana logo was not used on Japanese
bikes until 1987, as it was not deemed politically correct
on the local market ! Remember that after WWII, the
USA demanded all Japanese sword to be destroyed and
only those of historical value were allowed to be kept
as museum pieces.
créatif : Hans G. Kasten, Hans A. Muth & Jan Fellström
ci-dessus ! Today,
Mr. Kasten only regret about the Katana is that Hans
A. Muth got most of the fame for the Katana styling.
Mr. Kasten would like history to remember that 3 persons
founded Target Design together, and all 3 were
involved in the creative process : Hans G. Kasten,
Hans A. Muth & Jan Fellström above !
Rencontrer
Meeting
M. Ehn also was a great time, as Friedrich is a real
biker - among all the younger guys, he was the star
at our table ans had lived the same stories as us on
2 wheels ! I highly recommend you visit the Eggenburg
Motorrad Museum
as his collection is fantastic : an impressive collection
of Puch bikes, loads of mopeds and scooters, the famous
Vincent Blask Shadow and Brough Superior, even a Suzuki
XN85 Turbo and a Honda RC30... Wow ! By the way note
the superb emblem in front of ED-2 : it was made by
Bruce in the USA, who cuts steel with plasma - if you're
interested in getting one, let me know as he can make
more !
Note : some pictures above by Erich Walitsch !
